Our Visit to Wells Cathedral

July 2007

The Nave

The day promised to be fine and after nearly two hours on the coach we arrived outside the magnificent frontage of Wells Cathedral. As usual John and Peter had organised the day extremely well and guides were on hand to take us round this lovely centre of worship.

We were immediately struck by the vastness of the nave, the lovely flowing nature of the arches supporting the tower and the lightness of the stone. It was odd to think that in early times the whole building was painted in bright colours tinged with gold.

Of special interest were the layered altar frontals which, when lit from behind, must look wonderful.

When we arrived a choir was practising and the mellifluous music added so much to the atmosphere, even though it made the guides difficult to hear at times!

Following the tours which, for us, lasted longer that scheduled, there was a chance to relax in the restaurant, browse the bookshop, look around the town and survey the architecture of the buildings associated with the cathedral.
Following nearly all of Evensong, we embarked for the drive home -clearly a most rewarding day out.
Many thanks again to the entertaining company, the organisation and the weather!
