Parish Church Tower

Tower open
at last!

Saturday May 19th saw the opening of the tower after the renovation of the pinnacles and a popular opening it turned out to be. For those who braved the 204 steps and who received a certificate to prove it, the view was truly amazing. The cost per visit is £2.00 and well worth it, although visitors do have to be fit to make the top!

On the first opening day, the weather started out fine but turned grey, cold and rainy around mid day. For those who waited, however, the sun shone once again and the visit was totally memorable.

Well done to the volunteers who braved the top of the tower to warn visitors of the obstacles under foot.

Gargoyle

Much of the stone work on the pinnacles was in a serious state of decay and there are still signs of erosion visible on the pinnacles. But most of the stone work which was seriously decayed has been replaced and some of the gargoyle carvings are truly inspired.

View across to Stratton

This is just one small portion of the stunning views across Cirencester, the Abbey grounds and Cirencester Park.

The best views can only be obtained by braving the 204 steps. Thanks to the BBC the steps have all been repaired so climbing is much easier! Passing others in the narrow space is difficult!
