Why Suffering and Evil?

Jan van der Lely is Assistant Curate in the Parish of Cirencester, and was formerly a teacher of Religious Studies, Ethics and Philosophy of Religion.
One of the biggest challenges to faith is the existence of suffering in the world, especially innocent suffering. How do we answer those who point out that an all-powerful and loving God ought to stop the evils of the world? Yet at the centre of the gospel story is the death by torture of an innocent man, Jesus, who taught that God is love. How can we make sense of this? It’s a problem which theologians and philosophers have wrestled with through the ages, and that you and I will revisit each time something painful happens in our own lives.
