John Witcombe is Gloucester Diocesan Director of Ordinands and Curate Training – with responsibility for around 150 people exploring ordination, training, and completing their first curacies. He has been in Gloucester with his wife, Ricarda, who is priest in charge of St. Paul’s Gloucester, since 2005.
John was on the staff of St. John’s College Nottingham from 1998-2005, as Dean of College leading the college’s programme of formation for ministry and with a particular role in teaching Practical Theology and the Doctrine and work of the Holy Spirit. Before this, he was in parish ministry in a variety of contexts for almost 15 years, most recently as Team Rector of Uxbridge in the Diocese of London.
John and Ricarda have 5 children at various stages of education and post education. When they are not busy with church or children, they relax by walking out their stresses in the hills! In our course, ‘The Holy Spirit and the People of God’, we will be look at how the church has understood the person and work of the Holy Spirit, and how church life has reflected that understanding from scripture through to the present day. The Spirit is God’s gift of life to the world and to God’s people, and exploring this gift is always challenging and exciting. Those who come to the course will, I hope, be strengthened in their Christian life, their worship and their witness, and discover afresh God’s guidance and resources as they live out their Christian faith in the church and the world. They will also have the chance to learn and reflect on some of the different ways of responding to the Spirit which can be experienced in other churches today.
